On Thursday September 5th, we held our forum: "The business of reducing single-use plastics" attended by more than 50 guests at Highroad in Dickson. We were delighted to be joined by Chris Steel, MLA, Minister for Recycling and Waste Reduction; and our panellists Sasa Sestic, Managing Director of ONA coffee, Manuel Xyrakis, Manager of Ainslie IGA and Katherine Harrington from ACT NoWaste. We also welcomed the founders of GreenCaffeen who were able to display their swap and go coffee cups.
It was a lively and productive discussion and we heard from a broad spectrum of small and large business owners and community groups. Discussion delved into issues such as: how can we be sure alternative products will be recycled or processed, and what action will Government take to make waste management easier for businesses? This weekend find us at the Zero Waste Festival to continue the discussion on setting targets and timelines for moving towards a plastic-free ACT. You can read our submission to the ACT Government on the Phasing out single-use plastics Discussion Paper. We are calling on the ACT Government to set an ambitious agenda about phasing out and / or banning a range of single-use plastics products, starting with those that have simple alternatives. Plastic pollution is a significant local, national and gloabl problem. Single-use plastics are all around us: in our homes, workplaces, waterways, city parks and even our nature reserves.
