SUMMARY:Webinar: Preventing extinctions and restoring life to the upper Murrumbidgee River
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register for the webinar. \nDid you know that the Upper Murrumbidgee River receives less than 10% of its natural flows? This important river\, that has been dammed for the Snowy Hydro Scheme\, has been deprived of flows for too long and is in crisis. \nNow\, for the first time in more than 20 years\, the rules controlling environmental releases to this part of the river from Tantangara Dam are being reviewed. After months of consideration\, the Independent Review Panel has just released their draft report for comment. \nThis presents a critical opportunity for all of us to make our voices heard on restoring the health of the river that is critical to sustaining the future of our region. We need major change to reverse the ongoing decline in river health and support the recovery of endangered species\, and now is our chance to make it happen. \nThe Conservation Council ACT Region is excited to present the webinar: Preventing extinctions and restoring life to the upper Murrumbidgee River. \nJoin Antia Brademann\, Upper Murrumbidgee Demonstration Reach Facilitator and Anna McGuire\, water policy researcher to discuss: \n·       the current state of the Upper Murrumbidgee River and what it needs to thrive \n·       what the Independent Review Panel Report is recommending \n·       and how we can take this opportunity to advocate for a healthier river system. \nPlease note this webinar will be held via Zoom. A Zoom link will be provided to participants following registration. \nA recording will be made available after the event. \nClick here to register for the webinar.

SUMMARY:Saving our Western Edge - Next Steps Information Night
DESCRIPTION:Come along to our Next Steps Information Night to find out how you can get involved in the next stage of our community campaign to save Canberra’s Western Edge from suburban sprawl development\, and instead secure funding for its restoration as a part of the national 1% for Nature campaign. We have two new tactics to introduce (attending MLA mobile offices and Canberra’s Biggest Nutbush: Line up for City Limits) and we will also be reviewing our current tactics (petition stalls\, screenings of On the Edge and meetings with MPs) to see how they can be improved. After the formal portion of the event\, there will be the option to stick around and share a warm\, vegan meal with fellow volunteers!  \nRegister here: https://events.humanitix.com/saving-our-western-edge-next-steps-info-night \nSince August of last year\, we have collected over 1\,900 signatures on the Save our Western Edge petition\, sent over a thousand emails to our MLAs calling for their support\, and directly questioned the Planning Minister during our first rally of the campaign.  And while the ACT Government has been scrambling in response to our pressure\, they are still only talking of vague plans for conservation and planning rather than making any real decisions about saving our Western Edge – so we need to keep upping the ante. \nBut this isn’t just about saving the Western Edge from development! This year we\, alongside other Conservation Councils around the country\, launched a national campaign to secure 1% of the federal budget for restoring places of natural value. Winning this new campaign would mean not just protecting the Western Edge\, but securing funding to regenerate it as well! \nThat’s where YOU come in – we need more volunteers on the ground to keep the campaign growing in its numbers and scope. We have two new tactics to introduce and will be reviewing our current tactics to see how they can be improved. So\, come along to our info night to learn about the next stage of the campaign\, meet fellow volunteers\, and walk away with an impactful role that suits you! \nIf you can’t make this session then make sure you have completed our volunteer sign-up form and we will be in touch over the phone to get you started.
