SUMMARY:Canberra's Western Edge walks - Stony Creek Nature Reserve
DESCRIPTION:Help keep the Western Edge safe from bulldozers\nRegister here: https://events.humanitix.com/canberra-s-western-edge-walks-stony-creek-nature-reserve\n\nElioth Gruner was one of Australia’s most important landscape painters. Based in Sydney\, he told friends that the areas around Canberra had the greatest clarity of light of anywhere in Australia. Gruner won the Wynne Prize twice with paintings of the Western Edge. The first time was in 1934 for Murrumbidgee Ranges. Gruner’s artistic love for the Western Edge is part of the historic culture of this place. More recently\, Australia’s revered artist Rosalie Gascoigne was inspired by the same unique landscape qualities\, which she described as ‘all air\, all light\, all space\, all understatement.’ \nJoin us for a stroll through this stunning landscape that is so beloved by artists. We will follow the banks of Deep Creek\, clad in ancient trees in rare box-gum grassy woodland. Step over the historic\, lichen-painted stile to see natural regeneration in action at Stony Creek Nature Reserve. Bring your camera to capture your own views of the clarity of light. Find out how suburban sprawl could bulldoze this precious place and how we can care for it instead. \nAfter the walk\, stay for a cup of tea\, a biscuit and a chat with fellow participants about the campaign to save the Western Edge. \n  \nWALK DETAILS \nSunday 18 October 2026 \n1:00pm to 3.30pm – Up to 3km walk on easy trails \n3.30 – 4.00pm – afternoon tea and chat \n  \nMEETING LOCATION \nOn the left hand side of Uriarra Road\, opposite 468 Uriarra Road\, Stromlo \nMap coordinates: -35.296741\, 149.002891 \nMap link: https://maps.app.goo.gl/hsHnMubzoGPjLPb86 \n  \nDirections: \nPark along the short trail on the left hand side of Uriarra Road\, opposite the blue and red barrel letter boxes at 468 Uriarra Road. \n  \nWHAT TO BRING/WEAR \nWear long pants\, enclosed shoes\, and a hat \nDepending on the weather – jacket and beanie \nSunscreen\, water\, snacks \n  \nMORE INFORMATION \n\nSee the development proposals in the ACT Government’s Western Edge investigation report: Western Edge Growth Management + Engagement Framework 2023\nSign the petition to save the Western Edge: https://conservationcouncil.org.au/western-edge/\nWatch a video about Rosalie Gascoigne’s Canberra influences: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/-w11Y7SaKA0\nFind out how Canberra Museum + Gallery is acquiring Wool Clip by Rosalie Gascoigne for our city’s art collection: https://www.cmag.com.au/about/support\nFor walk inquiries\, contact: Jennifer 0416 165 476

SUMMARY:Canberra's Western Edge walks - Cooleman Ridge\, 25 October 2026
DESCRIPTION:Help keep the Western Edge safe from bulldozers\n\nRepeat walk by popular demand! A gentle climb through the Cooleman Ridge Nature Reserve takes us past ancient trees in thriving eucalyptus woodland to one of the most breath-taking\, panoramic views in Canberra. Looking west\, rural properties and grassy woodland roll towards the Murrumbidgee River and the triple-tiered backdrop of mountain ranges. This rural corridor is home to our iconic wildlife and gives Canberrans access to nature and recreation. It can’t be replaced.  But the ACT government is considering suburban sprawl that could let developers bulldoze the entire landscape from Kambah to Mount Stromlo. Find out what is proposed and help keep the Western Edge safe for our kids and grand kids. \nAfter the walk\, stay for a cup of tea\, a biscuit and a chat with fellow participants about the campaign to save the Western Edge. \nRegister now: https://events.humanitix.com/canberra-s-western-edge-walks-cooleman-ridge-25-october-2026\nWALK DETAILS \nSunday 25 October 2026 \n1:00pm to 2.30pm – Up to 2km walk \n2.30pm – 3.00pm – afternoon tea and chat \nMEETING LOCATION \nCooleman Ridge Nature Reserve\, Darrell Place\, Chapman\, ACT \n \n-35.359862\, 149.033692\, Map link \nWHAT TO BRING/WEAR \nWear long pants\, enclosed shoes\, and a hat. SUMMARY:Canberra's Western Edge walks - Stony Creek to Murrumbidgee River
DESCRIPTION:Help keep the Western Edge safe from bulldozers\nRegister here: https://events.humanitix.com/canberra-s-western-edge-walks-stony-creek-to-murrumbidgee-river\n\nJoin us on a mostly off-track day walk with some scrambling over rocks from Stony Creek to Murrumbidgee River\, where platypuses paddle in deep pools. Follow the banks of Deep Creek clad in ancient trees in box-gum grassy woodland\, and step over the historic stile to see natural regeneration where it meets Stony Creek in the Nature Reserve. Then look out for threatened rainbow bee-eaters as we clamber down the river valley side to experience the last healthy\, wild river reach in the ACT. You might see platypuses\, rakalis and echidnas. The river stretch has no road or track access\, which keeps vulnerable Macquarie Perch\, Murray Cod\, and Murray River Crayfish safe. These water creatures are highly sensitive to water quality degradation from suburban sprawl. If the ACT government lets developers bulldoze the Western Edge\, this river reach could be muddied by sediment from its soils\, which are highly susceptible to erosion. Once the fish and animals are gone\, we won’t get them back. Find out how we can save the wild reaches of the Murrumbidgee River for our kids and grandkids to enjoy. \nAfter the walk\, stay for a cup of tea\, a biscuit and a chat with fellow participants about the campaign to save the Western Edge. \n  \nWALK DETAILS \nSunday 8 November 2026 \n9:00am to 3.30pm – 8km walk \n3.30pm to 4.00pm – afternoon tea and chat \n  \nMEETING LOCATION \nOn the left hand side of Uriarra Road\, opposite 468 Uriarra Road\, Stromlo \nMap coordinates: -35.296741\, 149.002891 \nMap link: https://maps.app.goo.gl/hsHnMubzoGPjLPb86 \nDirections: \nPark along the short trail on the left hand side of Uriarra Road\, opposite the blue and red barrel letter boxes at 468 Uriarra Road. \n  \nWHAT TO BRING/WEAR \nWear long pants\, enclosed shoes\, and a hat \nDepending on the weather – jacket and beanie \nSunscreen\, water\, snacks \n  \nMORE INFORMATION \n\nSee the development proposals in the ACT Government’s Western Edge investigation report: Western Edge Growth Management + Engagement Framework 2023\nSign the petition to save the Western Edge: https://conservationcouncil.org.au/western-edge/\nFind out how to spot a platypus: https://platypus.asn.au/\nFor walk inquiries\, contact: Jennifer 0416 165 476
