SUMMARY:Branching Out: Canberra Nature Walks - The history\, plants and animals of Red Hill Nature Reserve walk
DESCRIPTION:Discover the rich natural and cultural history of Red Hill on this guided walk with local conservationist and ecologist Michael Mulvaney. \nRed Hill contains the second largest area of critically endangered Yellow Box–Blakely’s Red Gum Grassy Woodland ecological community in the ACT\, and forms part of one of Australia’s largest connected and biodiverse woodland landscapes. The area provides habitat for many vulnerable and endangered plant and animal species and holds deep cultural and environmental significance. \nMichael has spent more than 40 years helping to conserve and protect Red Hill through his work with the Red Hill Regenerators. Drawing on decades of observation\, restoration work and connection to place\, he will share stories of the landscape’s ecology\, history\, plants\, wildlife and ongoing conservation efforts with us. \nEnjoy lunch before the walk – or join us for a coffee/afternoon tea and chat while we admire the views after the walk. \nWALK DETAILS\nSaturday 6 June 2026\, 12:30pm to 3:30pm\nRed Hill loop walk (with plenty of stops along the way to learn from Michael and observe nature) \nMEETING LOCATION\n60 Red Hill Dr\, Red Hill ACT 2603\nhttps://share.google/rFlAhpy40SNp63qZX \nWHAT TO BRING/WEAR\n– Wear long pants\, enclosed shoes\, and a hat\n– Sunscreen\, water\, snacks\n– Depending on the weather – jacket and beanie\n– Binoculars (if you have them) \nREGISTRATIONS\nhttps://events.humanitix.com/branching-out-the-history-plants-and-animals-of-red-hill-nature-reserve-walk \nFor more information or enquiries contact kelly.allison@conservationcouncil.org.au \n___ \nThese walks are made possible with assistance from the ACT Government under the ACT Environmental Grants Program. \nSAFETY AND RESCHEDULING\nYour safety is our first priority. We monitor weather\, location and track condition to assess risk and ensure safety. If the weather\, or tracks/river condition are considered to pose safety risks to attendees the walk will be rescheduled. Registered people will be notified as soon as possible prior to the walk date/time and given first opportunity to re-register for the new date. \nABOUT THE PROGRAM\nBranching Out: Canberra Nature Walks is an initiative aiming to engage the Canberra community\, especially people with no\, or very little\, experience with our nature\, and support them to enjoy all the beautiful nature spaces the ACT has on offer. We know that unfamiliar things can feel intimidating — especially when it comes to woodlands\, wildlife\, and insects — so we would like to support as many people as possible with making that first step. We hope to ignite a love of Canberra’s nature throughout the community and raise awareness of the importance of healthy ecosystems and the rich biodiversity across the ACT. \nThese walks are made possible with assistance from the ACT Government under the ACT Environmental Grants Program.

SUMMARY:Impact Hour - Professor Mark Howden AC
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the June edition of this monthly conversation series presented by SEE Change\, Conservation Council ACT Region and Canberra Environment Centre. \nGlobally\, climate action is still falling far short of what is needed — and the consequences are becoming increasingly visible through intensifying heatwaves\, fires\, floods and other climate impacts. But alongside the challenges\, there are also genuine reasons for optimism. \nIn this timely and engaging talk\, Mark will explore where the world is heading under current emissions trajectories\, what this means for Australia and the ACT\, and the practical opportunities still available to avoid the worst outcomes. Drawing on decades of work at the forefront of climate science and policy\, Mark will discuss both the sobering realities of climate change and the encouraging progress already underway — from renewable energy transitions and electric vehicle uptake to climate adaptation and emissions reduction initiatives. \nThe talk will run for approximately 30 minutes\, followed by audience Q&A and informal networking. The Dissent kitchen will be open. \nAbout the speaker \nEmeritus Professor Mark Howden AC is Vice Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and was until recently Director of the ANU Institute for Climate\, Energy and Disaster Solutions and Chair of the ACT Climate Change Council. \nMark has worked on climate variability\, climate change\, sustainability and innovation for almost 40 years across research\, industry and science-policy roles. He helped develop the greenhouse gas inventories that underpin the Paris Agreementand has been a major contributor to the IPCC since 1991 across climate science\, adaptation\, mitigation and greenhouse gas accounting. Alongside other IPCC contributors and Al Gore\, he shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. \nWidely recognised as one of Australia’s leading climate communicators\, Mark continues to advise governments\, industries and communities on practical pathways toward a safer and more sustainable future. \nRegistration required: https://events.humanitix.com/impact-hour-mark-howden-ac

SUMMARY:Branching Out: Could koalas call Gigerline Nature Reserve (Angle Crossing) home one day?
DESCRIPTION:Once abundant in the ACT\, the koala population has fallen victim to extensive land clearing for agriculture during the 19th century\, followed by urban sprawl in the 20th and 21st century. These days\, sightings in and near the ACT are very rare. \nThere’s a chance that Canberra has an extremely low-density resident group of koalas\, or at least we might be able to revive one!\nVolunteers are conducting potential koala habitat surveys across the ACT each Wednesday with the Conservation Council lead Keith Joliffe. This fieldwork is part of a 3-year collaborative study between Conservation Council and ANU to judge the viability of ACT woodlands as wild Gula habitat\, to inform future policy. \nYou don’t need an environmental background to help\nKeith\, the project lead\, will show you how to identify tree species\, estimate canopy density\, and tree health and height. He’ll also show you how to record it in the datasheet. \nYou’ll be enjoying some of the most beautiful nature in the ACT\, while being a citizen scientist and contributing to the future of the koalas in the ACT! \nDATE AND TIME\nWednesday 17 June 2026\, 10:00am to approximately 1:00pm \nLOCATION\nGigerline Nature Reserve\, Angle Crossing\nThe specific meeting location will be provided to registered people \nTERRAIN AND FITNESS\nYou’ll need to have good mobility and a reasonable level of fitness to walk through undergrowth on rough ground and maybe uphill. There will be frequent pauses while trees are assessed. Contact Keith (or Kelly) to have a private\, confidential chat\, to work out if it’s right for you – or if changes can be made to accommodate your needs. \nWHAT TO BRING/WEAR\n– Food and water\n– Wear long pants\, enclosed shoes\, and a hat\n– Sunscreen\, water\, snacks\n– Depending on the weather – jacket and beanie\n– Gaiters if you have them – during winter they are especially helpful for protection against grass seeds\, burrs\, blackberry thorns etc \nWANT TO ATTEND BUT DON’T HAVE TRANSPORT?\nIf you want to help but don’t have transport\, contact Keith – he’s happy to pick people up and drop them off. The more people at each location helping – the merrier he is! \nREGISTRATIONS\nhttps://events.humanitix.com/branching-out-koalas-gigerline-nr \nMORE INFORMATION\nFor more information or enquiries contact keith1947@hotmail.com or kelly.allison@conservationcouncil.org.au \n___ \nSAFETY AND RESCHEDULING\nYour safety is our first priority. We monitor weather\, location and track condition to assess risk and ensure safety.
