Dear Welcome to the Conservation Council's Yellow Box Newsletter, our monthly update on the latest news, campaigns and events relating to the environment in the ACT. There is no doubt that for those of us who are passionate about action on climate change and protection of our natural areas, the Federal Election result was a disappointment. In light of this outcome, we aim to continue engaging all Australians, and communicate the importance of these issues. We need to rip up the social licence for digging up, exporting and burning fossil fuels, and advocate for a quick transition to clean renewable energy. In the ACT, the Government declared a climate emergency in the days leading up to the Federal Election. Nonetheless on ACT Budget Day, environment spending remained static and the level of ambition didn't reflect the emergency we are facing.
And finally, it was World Environment Day on June 5. Our World Environment Day Dinner on Saturday was a great oppounity to get together with like-minded people and to reflect on what what more we can be doing. To those of you who were able to come along, we hope you had a great evening. Happy reading! Regards Helen Oakey Executive Director Conservation Council ACT Region |
