10 May 2024

Welcome to our fortnightly Yellow Box newsletter.

Due to financial pressures, the Council is reducing staff hours, this includes the director role changing to four days per week. As a result we will also be reducing workload and breadth. We expect our community to be respectful of organisational capacity and realistic about the workload that can be undertaken with reduced hours.

This World Environment Day, make a difference by fundraising for the Conservation Council! Stand with us and raise some much needed funds, so we can continue our work to protect nature and create a safe climate future.

We made a submission to the "Future Gas Strategy" which was released by the federal government this week. We are dismayed by the blatant disregard for Indigenous culture, Country, wildlife, farmers and the climate. For a safe livable climate, clean air, healthy water and food security we must keep fossil fuels in the ground. Opening new fossil gas fields for decades to come destroys any change of staying below 1.5 degrees of warming. Here in the ACT we have proven that we can move to renewable electricity. To stand up to the fossil fuel lobby you can support the Pacific Climate Warriors at 12noon today on the lawns of Parliament House. You can also sign on to Lock the Gate's letter saying no to Santos Narrabri gas field.

We are appalled by the desecration of Larrakia cultural heritage and gouldian finch habitat currently being undertaken by DHA at  Binybara (Lee Point) and we will continue to stand up to similar activity here in Canberra, at Lawson Grasslands. DHA cannot be trusted to appropriately manage Lawson Grasslands, habitat to the Golden Sun Moth and Gang-gang cockatoo. This is the result of the failure of our federal environmental and cultural heritage laws which are speeding nature and culture destruction instead of halting it. Learn more and take action here.

Until next time,

The Conservation Council Team

We can and should have both Nature and Housing.

The deteriorating health of our environment coupled with a growing population sparks competing debate over whether to prioritise housing or nature. This debate needs to recognise nuance - we can address the housing crisis and protect nature with clever planning. If we are to prevent environmentally destructive impacts of urban development, we must focus on building more affordable housing within our current city footprint, instead of continuing to spread out exponentially.

We are in the midst of an extinction crisis and our national nature law is in need of urgent, comprehensive reform.

We are disappointed by the recent announcement of the government’s failure to deliver the full reform of the national environment law. We are in the midst of an extinction crisis and our national nature law is in need of urgent, comprehensive reform. We call on on the government to deliver the full package in this term of parliament. To make sure this happens now is a crucial time for your MP to hear from you that Australians demand strong nature laws. BirdLife Australia has developed this guide. Read more about the Conservation Council's response to fragmented nature laws here.

Ask your MP to support the Duty of Care Bill

Do you believe that our children and generations to come deserve a safe climate? Senator Pocock's 'Duty of Care' Bill would require the Australian Government to consider this in all policies and decisions, but it needs to pass a vote to become law.

The bill is unlikely to pass unless a large number of Australians begin to contact their local representatives and let them know that they want their representative to vote for this Bill.

Use this easy letition guide to write a customised letter to your federal representative, urging them to support the Bill.

Today they are a big threat to our native species.
