The ACT Environment Awards celebrate the efforts and accomplishments of environmentalists and environment groups, and the contributions they have made to the environment in the ACT and beyond. A contribution to the environment is a contribution to the future and we are glad to celebrate award winners and nominees at the Conservation Council’s Spring Mingle each November.
You are welcome to make a nomination for yourself (or your group) or someone else.
The awards are:
- CWP Renewables Environmentalist of the Year
- Young Environmentalist of the Year (28 years or under)
- Conservation Council Member Group of the Year
Nominations extended! Closing Friday 25 October at 5PM
The award winners will be announced at the 2019 Spring Mingle on 1 November 2019.

Environmentalists make a significant contribution to the protection of our environment through many avenues, including but not limited to organising community campaigns, volunteering, political advocacy, research and science.

Aim / Criteria |
The Award is to recognise the efforts of the recipient(s) to contribute to the protection of the environment. Judges will take into account: • Exemplary contribution; • significance of their contribution to the environment; • how long they have been contributing; • the challenges they faced in achieving their goals; • the current and ongoing impact of their contribution; • the level of leadership displayed; and • whether their involvement was voluntary or paid. |
Award | The Award winner will receive a framed certificate. |
Who can apply | A person in the ACT community who has made a significant contribution to the environment. We accept applications from all races, religions and genders and look forward to diversity of applications. |
Nominations & Closing date | Nominations close 12 noon, Monday 21 October 2019. |
How it is judged | The recipient shall be chosen by majority vote of the Judging Panel, with the Conservation Council Executive Director having a casting vote if necessary. The Judging Panel reserves the right, in any given year, not to issue the Award. |

Moira and John Rowland Young Environmentalist of the Year Award

Young environmentalists make an impressive contribution through many avenues, including but not limited to community campaigns, volunteering, political advocacy, research and science. This annual award is in memory of Moira and John Rowland who were lifelong committed environmentalists and played a lead role in establishing the Canberra Environment Centre and the Conservation Council ACT Region. The Moira and John Rowland Young Environmentalist Award recognises young achievers committed to improving our environment. The Award is to go to an individual aged under 28 and living in Canberra or our region who, in the past 12 months, has made an outstanding contribution to protecting our environment. |

Aim / Criteria |
The Award is to recognize the efforts of the recipient(s) to contribute to the protection of the environment. The Judging Panel will take into account: • Exemplary contribution; • the scope of the work and the environmental outcomes of the young person’s efforts; • the level of inspiration to other young people to get involved in helping our environment; • their management and/or leadership skills; • whether the individual has worked alone or as part of a team or group; • whether their involvement has been voluntary or paid; and • level of difficulty of circumstances faced in achieving their goals. |
Award | The Award winner will receive a framed certificate and a cash prize of $250. |

Conservation Council ACT Member Group of the Year Award

The Conservation Council Member Group Award recognises the very valuable input and role of our member groups in being a voice for the environment. We work with member groups on advocacy, community campaigns, education, research and engagement with the community, the private sector and with government. The Award is to go to a Conservation Council Member Group which has made an outstanding contribution to protecting and being a voice for our environment. |

The Award is to recognise the efforts of the member group’s contribution to the protection of the environment. The Judging Panel will take into account: • Exemplary contribution; • Length of time involved in environmental activities; • Effectiveness in raising awareness; • Effectiveness in engaging the community in environmental protection, activism and/or sustainability; • Effectiveness in delivering environmental outcomes; • Cooperation with other conservation groups and individuals; and • Specific campaign outcomes. |
Award | The Award winner will receive a framed certificate. |
Who can apply | Any financial member group of the Conservation Council for the 2018-19 financial year. |
