Climate Action

Canberra is an international leader when it comes to climate action. We have transitioned to 100% renewable energy, banned new gas installations, and lead the country in the uptake of electric appliances and vehicles. 

However, there is more work to be done, and we cannot risk becoming complacent. The ACT Government took no new climate policies to the last ACT election, and have delayed the development of our new climate strategy. Other states such as Victoria are now overtaking us in climate ambition. 

There is still work to do to make the ACT a carbon neutral city.
We call on the ACT Government to:

• Bring forward Canberra’s commitment to net zero emissions by five years to 2040. 
• Speed up the phase out of gas infrastructure, including by implementing a ban on new gas appliances and ensuring a just transition for gas workers.
• Re-commit to a plan to phase out woodheaters in all ACT suburbs and ban new woodheater installations.
• Increase funding for low-income Canberrans, including renters, to transition away from fossil fuels. 
• Implement all recommendations by the Office of the Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment for reducing Scope 3 emissions.
• Ban fossil fuel sponsorship and advertising (companies, products) in the ACT.
• Increase funding for public and active transport infrastructure to reduce transport emissions. 
• Increase funding to support communities to adapt to the locked in impacts of climate change.
