Environment Exchange: Make the Switch to an all-electric home

Following the September launch of the Conservation Council’s ‘Make the Switch’ website, this online event explored the environmental reasons to switch our homes off gas and the benefits for your family of switching your home heating, hot water and cooking to all-electric appliances. Our expert panel guided the audience through how to switch and reduce your energy consumption and bills.

The recently re-elected Labor–Greens government is committing to ceasing gas connections to new homes and increasing support for Canberra households to improve energy efficiency, so switching our homes from gas to electricity is a significant and practical way for Canberra families to contribute to a sustainable future and build momentum for the necessary energy transformation. Now is the perfect time to go all-electric!

Guest speakers included Jenny Edwards, Ben Murphy, Emma Humphreys and Bonnie Jackson.

Jenny Edwards, Light House Architecture and Science, is passionate about energy efficiency in building design and construction. With a background in research, education and policy, Jenny became an innovator in the building industry, being the first to introduce air leakage testing and thermal imaging in the local construction industry. She combines the best of energy science with sustainable housing design in her award-winning firm Light House Architecture and Science. She is an ACT licensed Building Energy Efficiency Assessor and an advisor on the Residential Technical Advisory Group for the Building Code Energy Performance Trajectory Project.

Ben Murphy is the Proprietor and Head Trainer at Global Energy Training Solutions, a Canberra-based Registered Training Organisation specialising in electrical apprenticeships and post-trade training in renewable energy and telecommunications. Ben is a licensed electrician and renewable and sustainable energy advocate.

Emma Humphreys, Director, and Bonnie Jackson, Acting Assistant Director of the ACT Government’s ActSmart Households team, will explain the support programs available to help households upgrade gas appliances to electric versions and improve home energy efficiency.

Our Environment Exchange events are an opportunity for our members and supporters to have a deep-dive conversation with an expert or two on a selected topical environmental issue. Participants learn from each other and find connections across their areas of work, helping to strengthen the environment community network across Canberra and region.
