In March of this year, the Conservation Council ACT Region joined other environmental advocacy organisations across the country in launching the national 1% for Nature Campaign. This campaign calls on the federal Labor Government to dedicate 1% of the federal budget to:
- Keep our wildlife and landscapes healthy for future generations
- Boost productivity by 40% – on par with the biggest pro-growth reforms
- Cut disaster recovery costs
- Improve public health
- Strengthen Australia against climate impacts
This national campaign goes hand in hand with local efforts to protect nature across the country, because it would mean increased funding to not just protect but actively regenerate the places we love. Here in the ACT for instance, winning the 1% for Nature campaign would mean that we could not just protect our Western Edge from urban sprawl development, but receive the funds to properly manage and restore it.
That’s where YOU come in – we need more volunteers on the ground to keep both the Western Edge and 1% for Nature campaigns growing in their numbers and scope. Whether it’s calling people who are interested in volunteering, talking to people about the campaign out in the community, or attending meetings with our politicians, there’s something for everyone to get involved with no matter your availability, skills or interests.
