D-Day: Divestment from Fossil Fuels
Do you want to know about the successful fossil fuel divestment campaign making waves locally and around the world? Do you want to know about moving money out of fossil fuels? And what is the National Day of Divestment Action?
Wonder no more! Come along to ENVIRONMENTAL EXCHANGE.
Ensuring a safe climate means that 80% of current fossil fuel reserves must remain in the ground. A clean energy economy transition can happen if we move money out of fossil fuels.
Each and every one of us are customers or members of banks, super funds, and institutions that invest funds so we have the power to divest from fossil fuel or push these institutions to be ethical and divest.
There are a range of campaigns being run around the world – campaigns for divestment from fossil fuels in universities and government, like Fossil Free ANU and Fossil Free ACT here in our own region. And there is also an ongoing push for the ‘Big 4’ banks to stop funding destructive fossil fuel projects.
So is divestment a solution to the problem of fossil fuels, the climate, environment and communities? How can we as individuals vote with our dollars and switch to a climate friendly future. Can we make a difference?
The National Day of Divestment (or D-Day) is on Saturday 3 May, and hundreds of bank customers will be switching to fossil free banks as part of Australia’s first ever national day of bank divestment action. This Conservation Council forum will give you some insight and info about divestment for institutions and individuals.
