Branching Out: Canberra Nature Walks – The history, plants and animals of Red Hill Nature Reserve walk

Discover the rich natural and cultural history of Red Hill on this guided walk with local conservationist and ecologist Michael Mulvaney.

Red Hill contains the second largest area of critically endangered Yellow Box–Blakely’s Red Gum Grassy Woodland ecological community in the ACT, and forms part of one of Australia’s largest connected and biodiverse woodland landscapes. The area provides habitat for many vulnerable and endangered plant and animal species and holds deep cultural and environmental significance.

Michael has spent more than 40 years helping to conserve and protect Red Hill through his work with the Red Hill Regenerators. Drawing on decades of observation, restoration work and connection to place, he will share stories of the landscape’s ecology, history, plants, wildlife and ongoing conservation efforts with us.

Enjoy lunch before the walk – or join us for a coffee/afternoon tea and chat while we admire the views after the walk.

– Wear long pants, enclosed shoes, and a hat
– Sunscreen, water, snacks
– Depending on the weather – jacket and beanie

If the weather, or tracks/river condition are considered to pose safety risks to attendees the walk will be rescheduled. Registered people will be notified as soon as possible prior to the walk date/time and given first opportunity to re-register for the new date.

Branching Out: Canberra Nature Walks is an initiative aiming to engage the Canberra community, especially people with no, or very little, experience with our nature, and support them to enjoy all the beautiful nature spaces the ACT has on offer. We know that unfamiliar things can feel intimidating — especially when it comes to woodlands, wildlife, and insects — so we would like to support as many people as possible with making that first step. We hope to ignite a love of Canberra’s nature throughout the community and raise awareness of the importance of healthy ecosystems and the rich biodiversity across the ACT.
