Canberra’s Western Edge walks – Stony Creek to Murrumbidgee River

Help keep the Western Edge safe from bulldozers

Join us on a mostly off-track day walk with some scrambling over rocks from Stony Creek to Murrumbidgee River, where platypuses paddle in deep pools. Follow the banks of Deep Creek clad in ancient trees in box-gum grassy woodland, and step over the historic stile to see natural regeneration where it meets Stony Creek in the Nature Reserve. Then look out for threatened rainbow bee-eaters as we clamber down the river valley side to experience the last healthy, wild river reach in the ACT. You might see platypuses, rakalis and echidnas. The river stretch has no road or track access, which keeps vulnerable Macquarie Perch, Murray Cod, and Murray River Crayfish safe. These water creatures are highly sensitive to water quality degradation from suburban sprawl. If the ACT government lets developers bulldoze the Western Edge, this river reach could be muddied by sediment from its soils, which are highly susceptible to erosion. Once the fish and animals are gone, we won’t get them back. Find out how we can save the wild reaches of the Murrumbidgee River for our kids and grandkids to enjoy.
After the walk, stay for a cup of tea, a biscuit and a chat with fellow participants about the campaign to save the Western Edge.
