Help keep the Western Edge safe from suburban sprawl

Canberra’s undeveloped western edge is a landscape that has inspired a deep sense of awe and belonging for thousands of years. It is intrinsic to who we are as Canberrans. It is also home to native wildlife and threatened species clinging on for dear life on the city’s outskirts. This special place is now being investigated for future development and in some cases, plans are already well advanced, or approved, for developments in sensitive areas.

On the south-western slopes of Belconnen, a subdivision plan is under development, prospects for a new landfill facility are under consideration, and planning for a permanent green-waste facility is being rushed through. This is despite a commitment by the government in 2008 to protect this area. These new plans risk polluting the landscape and damaging fragile ecosystems, including the Molonglo River.

On the western side of the Molonglo River, suburbs may cover the gentle slopes and grassy woodlands, displacing protected wildlife and disrupting wildlife corridors, unless we say no to suburban sprawl.

Join us for a stroll at the northern end of the Molonglo River Reserve. Experience the epic scale and the hidden valleys of the Western Edge, and the wildlife that shelters here, and learn why we should not develop such a special place.

After the walk, stay for a cup of tea, a biscuit and a chat with fellow participants about the campaign to keep the Western Edge safe for our kids and grandkids to enjoy.

This image shows how the rural blocks proposed for green waste and landfill (behind the fence on the right) slope down to the Molonglo River, which could cause polluting run-off. The rural area on the far left, on the other side of the river, is proposed for suburban sprawl.
