Protect Native Forests in our Region

Australia’s forests are home to unique plants and animals found nowhere else in the world including the spotted-tailed quoll, swift parrot and greater glider.
Forests are critical to the survival of our planet. They clean the air we breathe, purify water, store vast amounts of carbon, and reduce the local temperature by up to 15°C.
Despite their critical importance, native forests in our region, including near Braidwood and along the South Coast of NSW, are being destroyed.

Logging of our native forests, which are already under pressure from climate change and invasive species, is pushing Australia’s unique forest dwelling wildlife to extinction. Once our old forests are destroyed, they’ll be gone forever.

 Keep Our Forests Standing

The Problem

Forests at the NSW South Coast and near Braidwood are chopped down for wood chips, toilet paper and firewood. 70%+ of harvested native forests are made into these low-value products. Our precious spotted gum forests of the South Coast are making their way to Canberra to be burnt as firewood or shipped offshore as toilet paper.

Old growth forest trees provide hollows which can take over 100 years to form. Tree hollows are essential habitat for many threatened animals and birds. Without tree hollows our wildlife will not have space to breed and nest. This is pushing them towards extinction, as they rely on old trees for survival.

The Solution

WA and Victoria have already ended native forest logging, it’s time for NSW and the rest of the country to follow suit and protect what makes our country special.

Native forest logging is not economically viable and is heavily subsidised by taxpayers. We are literally paying for our forests to be bulldozed! Jobs in logging are declining rapidly with the industry employing only 1,800 people nationally. We can transition to plantation timber and provide a fair transition for workers. NSW can transition to plantation-based industries that protect jobs and nature. We do not need to log in our irreplaceable native forests.

Ultimately it is up to the NSW and Commonwealth Governments’ environmental ministers that native forest logging is reviewed and ended as soon as possible. We are calling on both the NSW Government to follow the suit of other states and declare an end to native forest logging in NSW and the Federal Environment Minister to declare an end to native forest logging nationally.
